Robert Anthony Eden becomes prime minister. In May 1955 Winston Churchill resigned due to ill health. His successor proved to be a similarly popular leader, winning an increased majority at the general election that year. Sir Frank Leonard Engledow CMG, FRS, (1890-1985) was Draper's Professor of Agriculture at the University of Cambridge (1930-1957), worked at the Plant Breeding Institute on the Cambridge University Farm on breeding varieties of wheat. He developed "Holdfast" in 1936, which was the standard for bread-making quality for 50 years onwards. He served in a large number of official advisory and other bodies. His biography is to be found in Biographical Memoirs of FRS, Vol 32 p.198 of 1986, and is written by Docter G.D.H. Bell CBE FRS.
