Monkman portrayed Donaldson in her 'prop cupboard', a small room in her house adjacent to that in which she writes. Many of the objects are recognisable as those from Donaldson's books including Room on the Broom (2002) and Highway Rat (2011). The author sits forward in the space of the painting, as if reading to a young audience. Commissioned by the Trustees as part of the First Prize, BP Portrait Award 2009.
