Matthew was introduced to Clare by Eddie Gray, the jazz violinist and composer. Eddie and Clare were mutual friends of Francis Bacon.
This portraits was taken after having tea at Clare's studio in west London. The studio has large double height windows at the front and back, perfect for Clare's painting and for Matthew who preferred to work without flash and in natural light.
