Peter Benenson's article The Forgotten Prisoners is published internationally, inspiring the founding of the human rights organisation, Amnesty International.
The philosopher and peace activist Bertrand Russell is imprisoned for inciting civil disobedience during a sit down demonstration at the Ministry of Defence and Hyde Park.
The farthing coin - used in Britain for the last 7 centuries - ceases to be legal tender.

Art and science

Rudolf Nureyev defects from the USSR fearing that the KGB would arrest him for being gay and for fraternising with foreigners. After seeking asylum in Paris he set up home in London at the Royal Ballet and began his famous partnership with Margot Fonteyn.
The satirical magazine, Private Eye is first published.

International

The East German government erects the Berlin Wall, ceasing free movement between East and West Berlin. The barrier prevented citizens of Soviet controlled East Germany from crossing the border into West Germany to work, or to defect.
Yuri Gagarin, the soviet cosmonaut, becomes the first man in space orbiting the earth on the 12th April.

ME 66 was not a SOE code, but refers to Military Establishment 66, which was responsible for SOE's field staff in Italy and the Mediterranean.

Norman George Ramseyer was born 11 Oct 1917, Bristol Shropshire-died Sept 1998. Father John, Mother Vallie, both the same as Frank and so they are brothers. Married Goddard 1940, region Edmonton, 3a 3814. He was on the SOE Secret List but his SOE Personnel has recently been opened. He was an automobile engineer. He joined the Territorial Army in 1937 and was commissioned 22 Feb 1940. He arrived in Middle East August 1940 and served with the 2nd Royal Tank Regiment in the Western Dessert until August 1942 when he was transferred to 6RTR as senior instructor Specialist Wing RAC from Dec 1942 to Oct 1943. He was mentioned in despatches three times, Feb 41, June 41 and Oct 42. On 24 Aug 1943 he was posted to Force 133 and undertook Paramilitary Parachute training at School ME102 Haifa. On 20nd October 2943 as part of the East Mediterranean Group was dropped into Greece in charge of Sub-Mission on operation Feather 4. It could be that his code was ME66. On 18th 1944 he was evacuated from the field arriving back in Cairo on 29th August. On 23rd October 1944 he was posted to No 15 GHQ Training Team. Although recommended for further SOE employment none eventuated. [1]
