Nicola Adams (b.1982) was the world’s first woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing, at London 2012, the first Games to include female competitors in every sport. In 2016, in Rio de Janeiro, she became the first British boxer since 1924 to retain an Olympic title. When she began training, the Amateur Boxing Association of England had still not ended its ban on women boxing, which had stood for over a century. It was lifted by vote in 1996 and, five years later, Adams became the first woman boxer to represent England. She was a European silver medallist in 2007 and World Championship silver medallist a year later. Openly bisexual, she was named the most influential LGBT person in Britain by the Independent in 2012. She was awarded an MBE in 2013.
