Set against a black background, Peters’s bold portrait asserts the athlete’s physical presence, strength and determination. Farah’s gaze seems distracted, as if he might be focusing his mind for a race.

Born in Somalia, distance runner Sir Mo Farah (b.1983) came, at the age of eight, to England, where his athletic talent was first identified by his school physical education teacher. At the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Farah won gold medals for the 5,000 metres and 10,000 metres races. He is the most decorated athlete in British history and was awarded a knighthood in the New Year’s Honours for 2017. In this photograph, by the British photographer Kate Peters (b.1980), Farah’s gaze seems distracted - the viewer might imagine he is focusing his mind for a race.
