Harold Wilson narrowly wins the general election for the Labour Party, the first of his four election victories.
Peter Allen and Gwynne Evans become the last people to be executed in the United Kingdom before capital punishment was abolished in 1965.

Art and science

Top of the Pops begins its reign as the longest running television music show. The first broadcast was presented by Jimmy Savile and included the Rolling Stones, Dusty Springfield, The Hollies and The Beatles, who were the show's first number 1 with I Want to Hold Your Hand.

International

The Civil Rights Act is passed in the USA, outlawing discrimination based on race, colour, religion, sex or national origin. The Act abolished the 'Jim Crow Laws' in the Southern States, making forced segregation illegal.
After spending two years in prison Nelson Mandela is sentenced to Life in Prison for the crimes of sabotage and crimes equivalent to treason against the Republic of South Africa.

The image is of Franta Belsky F.R.B.S., A.R.C. A (on the left) President of the Society of Portrait Sculptors (1963—1968) who in 1964 was the President of the Society of Portrait Sculptors, he is wearing the ivory presidents medal carved by Gwynneth Holt Sculptor (and wife of TB Huxley Jones). The Presidents medal was carved with equipment bequeathed to Gwyneth Holt by Richard Garbe ( Royal College of Art, Head of Sculpture for two decades (1926-46). Richard Garbe carved the Presidents medal for the Royal Society of British Sculptors with the same equipment.

TB Huxley Jones FRBS was a founding member of the Society of Portrait Sculptors in 1953 Society of portrait sculptors was founded by a small group of sculptors encouraged by resurgence of interest in portrait sculpture, the newly formed society was encouraged to bring about a renaissance in the art of portrait sculpture, through both its administration, and its annual exhibitions to support and develop its members aspirations and the public’s interest.

T B Huxley Jones was the founding Vice president to Sir Charles Wheelers President, he went on to become president between 1958 -63.

Jean Masson Davidson Medal - The societies international award for outstanding achievement in the art of portrait sculpture, founded 1962 and first awarded to TB Huxley Jones England 1963.
