    Haleh Afshar (b.1944) is an expert in Middle Eastern affairs, a professor of politics, women’s studies and Islamic law, and a cross-bench peer in the House of Lords. Afshar spent her early childhood in Iran and Paris. She moved to Britain to attend boarding school at the age of fourteen, despite not knowing how to speak English. She attended university in the UK before returning to Iran in her late twenties, working as a civil servant on land reform and as a journalist. She has written extensively on Iran and Iranian politics and has edited a number of books on women and development. She has held many posts with public and governmental bodies and served as Deputy Chair of the British Council’s Gender and Development Task Force for seven years. Afshar was awarded an OBE in 2005 for services to equal opportunities and was made a baroness two years later.
