Chadwick is shown here working on a mobile sculpture in his studio at his home in Upper Coberley in Gloucestershire. At this point in his career he was predominantly making unique objects instead of using the casting process. Visible on the table to Chadwick's right is a maquette for Cypress which was a rare instance when Chadwick made a preliminary model for a work. Cypress was commissioned by Misha Black for the terrace of the Regatta Restaurant on the South Bank as part of the Festival of Britain. The original work was later destroyed but the maquette seen here is now in the Tate collection.
