This highly charged bust-length portrait of Stephen Frears was painted from life during sittings in the artist’s London studio. Included in the Gallery display Portraits from Life, it was one of the outstanding works from the display which included a number of notable sitters. Goodman’s portrait was borne out of a friendship between the artist and sitter, and the artist was motivated by the desire to capture something of her sitter’s interior world.
