Doreen Lawrence (b.1952) is a campaigner and founder of the Stephen Lawrence charitable trust. Born in Jamaica, she was nine when her family emigrated to the UK. She came to public attention in 1993, following the racially aggravated murder of her son, Stephen, at a bus stop in south-east London. She and her then husband, Neville, campaigned to bring their son’s killers to justice and were critical of police handling of the case, claiming that incompetence and racism were hampering the investigation. Their campaigning and criticism resulted in a judicial inquiry in 1999 and generated headlines when it concluded that institutional racism in the Metropolitan Police was a primary cause in the failure to solve the case. Lawrence has since continued to work to secure reform in the police service and was awarded an OBE for services to community relations in 2003. In 2013, she was made a life peer in the House of Lords.
