Anglican Church doctrine is established by the Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion. The Articles represent a middle ground between the theology and practices of the Catholic Church and those of continental Protestant reformers.
Queen Elizabeth I comes under increased pressure from Parliament to marry and name a successor.
Plague epidemic sweeps across Europe, 20,000 inhabitants of London are killed.

Art and science

Publication of John Foxe's Actes and Monuments (or Book of Martyrs), which vividly describes the persecution of Protestants under Queen Mary I and exercises a considerable influence on English Protestant attitudes.
Parliament orders the translation of the Elizabethan Prayer Book into Welsh.

International

The Council of Trent closes. Since convening in 1545 it reasserted the doctrines of the Catholic Church in answer to the Protestant Reformation.
Assassination of Francis, Duke of Guise, leader of the French Catholic forces against Protestants (known as Huguenots).
The Peace of Amboise ends the First French War of Religion. Huguenots gain limited toleration. A force of united French Catholics and Protestants regains La Havre from the English.
