Twenty-four women permanent secretaries gathered at Buckingham Palace in February 2017 to celebrate senior female leadership in the Civil Service at a reception hosted by HM Queen Elizabeth II. A permanent secretary is the most senior civil servant in a government ministry, administering the day-to-day running of the department. The sitters pictured here celebrate the diversity of female leadership, past and present, featuring statisticians, scientists and government advisors on culture, gender, health, the environment, climate change, security and the economy.
