Jones began experimenting with self-portraiture as a Rome Scholar in 1982. Finding the process liberating, she describes: ‘To look at myself…it felt like slowly taking bits of me out of a box and beginning to examine them.’ Jones’s self-portraits celebrate difference and ‘awkward beauty’. Colour in her work is also important as a revelation of an emotional state, suggesting anxiety or harmony.
