The Black is the New Black portfolio of photographer Simon Frederick includes thirty-seven black British sitters chosen for their achievements across a variety of fields, including politics, business, culture, religion and science. These first and second generation black Britons include David Harewood (b.1965), celebrated for his role in the television series Homeland and actress Thandie Newton (b.1972), who is of Zimbabwean and English descent and has spoken of the racism she experienced growing up in Cornwall and the lack of film roles for people of colour. Frederick’s portraits - with their close cropping, sensitive compositions and skilful lighting - allow the viewer to connect intimately to the subjects.
