Described in the issue for July 1827:
Carriage Dress. A dress of straw-coloured muslin, spotted with bright geranium. Two flounces surround the border, scalloped at the edges, and bound with geranium-coloured satin. The body made plain, with a cleft collar round the bust. Long sleeves of white India muslin, finished at the wrists with scallops, and a broad gold bracelet of rich workmanship next the hand. The dress is made partially low, and under it is worn a fichu of tulle, with a pointed collar à la Vandyke, the points trimmed round with narrow lace. A hat of white chip, with two rosettes of white gauze ribbon placed over each temple beneath the brim. The hair arranged in long and large curls, confined across the forehead by a bandeau of twisted ribbon. The hat is crowned with two beautiful white ostrich feathers, the ends bending back towards the crown. Very broad strings of white figured gauze ribbon, with a rich pearl edge, depend over the bust.
Walking Dress. A Dress of fine cambric, with two broad flounces, ornamented at the edges with letting-in lace. A canezou spencer of tulle, beautifully trimmed with Brussels lace. Sleeves en gigot, with a very broad gold bracelet, fastened with a head in cameo. A hat of white chip, trimmed in bias across the crown, with a scroll of white sarcenet, and slightly ornamented with a rich, broad, white gauze ribbon, with Etruscan figures of sage-green. These ribbons not only hang down, two in the front of the bust, but one, very long, depends from behind, nearly as low as the ends of the sash. The shoes are of milk-chocolate-coloured kid, with straw-coloured gloves.

University College London, the first metropolitan university in England, is founded specifically to educate dissenters excluded from Oxford and Cambridge. Whig politician Henry Brougham, writer Thomas Campbell and financier and philanthropist Isaac Goldsmid are its principal patrons.


Britain, France and Russia sign a treaty in London agreeing to intervene in the Greek War of Independence. Allied troops under General Edward Codrington subsequently destroy Turkish and Egyptian fleets at the Battle of Navarino.
Western Australia is explored for the first time by Captain Stirling.
