  The singer-songwriter and musician Graham Nash (b.1942) grew up in Salford and co-founded The Hollies in the early 1960s with his school friend Allan Clark. Nash encouraged the band to write their own songs, was instrumental in forging their successful harmonies and took his first solo lead with them on the hit ‘On a Carousel’. Nash met David Crosby and Stephen Stills in 1966 on a Hollies US tour and later that decade left the band to form Crosby, Stills & Nash, which later became a quartet with Neil Young. After moving to California, Nash’s political engagement was reflected in his songs. He took this self-portrait in 1974, assisted by his then girlfriend Calli Cerami, at the Plaza Hotel, New York, at the end of the first Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young stadium tour. His most recent album, The Path Tonight, was released in April 2016. Nash became an influential photography collector in the early 1970s, and in 1976 hired Graham Howe as his curator, touring his collection over several years. In the late 1980s Nash became a pioneer of digital printing, researching and making early digital fine-art prints using an altered Iris printer, which he further adapted and distributed under Nash Editions from 1991.
