Moore was at the peak of his footballing career during the World Cup in Mexico in 1970, despite being falsely accused of stealing a bracelet from a Bogotá jeweller days before the tournament. He was placed under house arrest in Colombia, before the Prime Minister, Harold Wilson intervened. When he returned to the pitch, Moore showed no sign of the preceding drama. After a particularly assured performance against Brazil, the captain Pelé asked Moore for his shirt. Pelé later stated, ‘Of all the defenders I have challenged, Bobby Moore was the fairest, the best and the most honourable’.
