Dinner dress - Low dress of brochée muslin. Corsage à-l'enfant, gathered top and bottom. Long sleeves à-la-jardinière, in small plaits from the shoulder to the wrist; they are confined at the same distance below the shoulder by a ruche of tulle, to which is fastened a bow of ribbon, with long ends (see plate). Round the bosom of the dress and round the bottom a wide coloured ribbon is inserted in the hems. Sash tied in front to match. Bracelets of the same. The front hair is in light ringlets, falling low at the sides, and intermixed with field flowers; the back à la duchesse, with a rouleau and coque (the favourite style of coiffure of the Duchess of Orleans). Shoes to match the colour of the ribbons. White kid gloves. The second figure gives the back of the dress.

Dickens's second novel Oliver Twist is serialised in Bentley's Magazine. The story of the orphan Oliver is an attack on the Poor Law Amendment Acts (1834), a highly contentious piece of legislation which abolished outdoor relief, effectively increasing entry in the workhouse. The novel, famously made into a musical in 1968, marks Dickens as an outspoken social critic as well as a highly popular and commercial writer.International

Considered the founder of modern Russian literature, Pushkin blended Old Slavonic with vernacular Russian and was the first Russian writer to use everyday speech in his poetry.
