The plate was described in the August issue of the magazine:
Morning Visiting Dress. Robe of lavender bloom poult de soie, the corsage a three-quartered height at the back, and very open on the bosom, displaying a cambric chemisette ornamented with entre deux, and trimmed round the top with Valenciennes lace; the sides of the corsage are bordered with a ruche à la vielle, which descends in the tunic style down the sides, and round the border of the skirt. The sleeve is tight to the arm, descends a little below the elbow, and is terminated by a Valenciennes ruffler. White crape chapeau, a round shape, the interior trimmed en bonnet with lace and white brides, the exterior with a lace drapery, white ribbon, and a sprig of roses panaches with their foliage. Black lace shawl.
Ball Dress. White tulle robe over white gros de Naples, a very low corsage and short sleeve, formed of biais. The skirt is trimmed very high with three deep tucks, each surmounted by three bands of shaded green ribbon. A gauze scarf is disposed in a very novel style of drapery on the corsage, and the ends float loosely from the shoulders over the skirt. The hair is arranged in a full knot at the back of the head, and a profusion of light ringlets at the sides.

Britain experiences a railway boom. Peel's government passes a series of Acts creating provision of cheap, regular rail services. George Hudson, the first great railway entrepreneur, who controlled over 1,000 miles of railway track and whose enterprises made York a major commercial and transport hub, becomes known as 'the Railway King'.

Disraeli's Coningsby is published. The first of his 1840s 'Young England' trilogy, it was the cultural manifesto of Disraeli's vision for a new Conservativism.
David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson set up their innovative and pioneering photography studio in Edinburgh, capturing portraits of both Scottish society figures and workers, as well as urban and rural landscape scenes.

International

Tensions continue to mount in Eastern Europe over Russian imperialist ambitions, as Tsar Nicholas I describes the Ottoman Empire as 'the Sick Man of Europe'.
