Described in the magazine:
Morning Dress. Robe of one of the new autumnal silks; the corsage is half high behind, opens en coeur on the bosom, with a pelerine lappel bordered by niches of the same material. Short sleeves, easy but not wide, finished with ruches. Muslin long sleeve, ornamented with lace entre deux. High chemisette to correspond. Ceinture of green quadrilled ribbon. Lace cap very small, put far back upon the head, and trimmed with a wreath of coques; a band and ends[?] of green velvet ribbon.
Morning Visiting Dress. Pink satin robe, half high corsage with a small round pelerine, open on the bosom, and bordered by a festooned band of satin; the lower part of the corsage is drawn in full at the waist under a ceinture of one of the new figured ribbons. Long tight sleeves with cuff and mancheron trimmed en suite. The skirt is bound with a similar band, and a second is placed above it half way to the knee. Chemisette of clear cambric intersected with embroidered entre deux, and frilled round the top with lace. Capote of straw-coloured satin, covered with white lace, and trimmed with lace disposed en coquillé by a chou and ends of ribbon.

Britain experiences a railway boom. Peel's government passes a series of Acts creating provision of cheap, regular rail services. George Hudson, the first great railway entrepreneur, who controlled over 1,000 miles of railway track and whose enterprises made York a major commercial and transport hub, becomes known as 'the Railway King'.

Disraeli's Coningsby is published. The first of his 1840s 'Young England' trilogy, it was the cultural manifesto of Disraeli's vision for a new Conservativism.
David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson set up their innovative and pioneering photography studio in Edinburgh, capturing portraits of both Scottish society figures and workers, as well as urban and rural landscape scenes.

International

Tensions continue to mount in Eastern Europe over Russian imperialist ambitions, as Tsar Nicholas I describes the Ottoman Empire as 'the Sick Man of Europe'.
With the overthrow of the Haitians, the Spanish-speaking portion of the island of Hispaniola gains independence, as the Dominican Republic.
