Described in the magazine:
Carriage Dress. Pink taffetas robe, the corsage is high behind, but very open on the bosom, and laced with silk cord, displaying a richly embroidered low chemisette. Tarlatane sleeves, demi-long, wide at the extremities, but nearly tight at the upper part, they are embroidered and edged with lace, corresponding with that on the collar; cleft mancherons bordered with fancy trimming. Two deep flounces, headed and bordered in a similar style, decorate the skirt. Drawn bonnet of white gros de Naples, a round, open, and moderately deep shape, trimmed with ribbons to correspond, and a half wreath of roses mingled with white blossoms.
Public Promenade Dress. Dark grey poult de soie robe, a tight corsage, high behind, but forming a V on the bosom. Long tight sleeve. Scarf-mantelet of India muslin lined with pale pink taffetas. It is made high at the back, with demi-long sleeves of rather a large size, and a moderately deep pelerine. The whole is beautifully embroidered, and edged with Valenciennes lace. The chapeau presents a front view of the one just described.

Britain experiences a railway boom. Peel's government passes a series of Acts creating provision of cheap, regular rail services. George Hudson, the first great railway entrepreneur, who controlled over 1,000 miles of railway track and whose enterprises made York a major commercial and transport hub, becomes known as 'the Railway King'.

Disraeli's Coningsby is published. The first of his 1840s 'Young England' trilogy, it was the cultural manifesto of Disraeli's vision for a new Conservativism.
