Described in the magazine:
Walking Dress. Fawn-coloured robe, a close high corsage. Drawn bonnet, composed of lilac poult de soie, a round shape, trimmed with flowers and ribbons to correspond. Mantelet-écharpe of lilac poult de soie, a large size, rounded behind, and descending very low with a deep pelerine of the same form; long scarf ends. The entire is bordered with plaited ribbon to correspond.
Morning Visiting Dress. Shaded taffetas robe, a high corsage opening in a long V on the bosom, and trimmed with a pelerine lappel bordered à la vielle. Long sleeve open at the wrist over a muslin one, a similar trimming goes round the opening and up the back of the sleeve, and five rows of it encircle the skirt. Pink poult de soie chapeaux, a moderately open shape, long brim, bordered with a flat garniture of shaded marabouts; a single long plume to correspond is attached on one side of the exterior by an ornament formed of coques of white ribbon, from which floating ends descend.

Britain experiences a railway boom. Peel's government passes a series of Acts creating provision of cheap, regular rail services. George Hudson, the first great railway entrepreneur, who controlled over 1,000 miles of railway track and whose enterprises made York a major commercial and transport hub, becomes known as 'the Railway King'.

Art and science

Disraeli's Coningsby is published. The first of his 1840s 'Young England' trilogy, it was the cultural manifesto of Disraeli's vision for a new Conservativism.
David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson set up their innovative and pioneering photography studio in Edinburgh, capturing portraits of both Scottish society figures and workers, as well as urban and rural landscape scenes.

International

Tensions continue to mount in Eastern Europe over Russian imperialist ambitions, as Tsar Nicholas I describes the Ottoman Empire as 'the Sick Man of Europe'.
