Described in the magazine:
No. 1. Ball Dress. Pink crape robe over a satin one. It is considerably shorter than the satin dress; the corsage, deeply pointed, and draped à la grecque, is ornamented with a breast knot en papillon of pink ribbon. Demi-mameluke sleeve looped to the shoulder over a short satin one by a similar knot . The skirt is trimmed on each side with three bands of ribbon, each furnished with knots. Fancy coiffure, composed of passementerie, and ornamented with roses.
No. 2. Evening Dress. Green satin robe; the corsage, round at top and deeply pointed, is trimmed with a berthe of green blonde lace; there are two falls, each ornamented with a knot of ribbon. Short full sleeve, looped high under the lace. The skirt is trimmed with three blonde flounces; they are very deep, and the pattern extremely rich; they are looped at each side by knots of ribbon, with long floating ends. The head-dress is a kind[?] of cap, composed of blonde lace; it has no caul, and is profusely trimmed with flowers, foliage, and ruby velvet ribbon.

Art and science

A good year for novels: Emily Bronte's passionate, rebellious and gothic Wuthering Heightsis published, followed shortly by her sister Charlotte's 'Jane Eyre, a story of a governess's struggle for liberty from social and gender constrictions. Drawing on a similar vein of revolution and rebellious women, William Thackeray's satirical novel Vanity Fair is serialised.

International


The Don Pacifico affair sparks an international incident, when the Jewish trader's business was burned in an anti-semitic attack in Athens. When the Greek government refused to compensate him, Gibraltar-born Pacifico appealed to the British government. Foreign Minister Palmerston sent a squadron into the Aegean in 1850 to seize goods of the equivalent value, leading to strained relations with Turkey and Russia, and heated debates in Parliament.
