Fashion photographer Ram Shergill was commissioned to photograph the musician Amy Winehouse by the Guardian for a cover shoot, a year after the release of her debut album Frank (2003). The session took place in Shergill’s east London studio and a nearby 1950s diner, and Winehouse styled her own clothes. Shergill explains, ‘Whilst photographing her we listened to Martha Reeves and the Vandelas, she drank a strawberry milkshake and started to elongate her eyeliner.’ Although one portrait was published, most of the images remained unseen. The portraits reveal a playful and fresh-faced Winehouse, showing her vulnerability before she rose to fame with her second album Back to Black (2006).
