Seema Kennedy MP, the Conservative Member of Parliament for South Ribble in Lancashire, is photographed by Julia Fullerton-Batten in St Stephen’s Hall, once the chamber of the House of Commons. In her characteristically theatrical style, Batten elevates Kennedy on a pedestal, making a bold statement about the changing status of women in society. Flanked by statues of famous male parliamentarians, the MP adopts an assertive, powerful pose. This portrait was made as part of '209 Women', an all-female photography initiative to mark 100 years since the first election in which women could vote.
