Current affairs

King George V changes his name from 'Saxe-Coburg' to 'Windsor.' Amid wartime anti-German public sentiment the British Royal Family decided to relinquish their German name and titles. The name 'Windsor' was chosen as variation on ''Wettin', the late Prince Albert's personal surname.

Art and science

The National Photographic Record is established at the instigation of the photographer Walter Stoneman to commission photographs of 'distinguished living contemporaries of British nationality.' This project allowed the National Portrait Gallery to circumvent its own rule that portraits could not enter the collection until the sitter had been dead ten years.

International

The Russian Revolution begins with the February Revolution and the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II. Seven months later the Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin seize power in the October Revolution forming the Soviet Communist Government, which lasted until 1991. The USA abandons its neutrality and joins the war against Germany following a series of attacks on American passenger and merchant ships.

I have other pictures of Raoul and his sisters Aglae and Lucille. Aglae married Dr. Thomas Cooke. My wife's grandfather was the grandson of Dr. Thomas Cooke and Comtesse Aglae Helene Edme De Hamel De Manin and was raised by them. I have this picture in my collection.

Raoul was of French & Welsh descent. His father, Jean François was born in Calais in 1793 & was made a Chevalier of L'Ordre de la Légion d'honneur in 1814. In 1838 he married Helen Marian Rees, daughter of John Rees of Cilymaenllwyd, Pembrey, Carmarthenshire. They had 10 known children: 7 daughters & 3 sons. Jean François died circa 1858, probably in Paris & Helen died in 1868 in Bayswater, London.

This is likely to be Raoul Enguerrand Napoleon De Hamel De Manin (1854–1927). His elder brother Gustave Leon Albert De Hamel De Manin (1848–1906) initially inherited the title of Count from his father, Jean Francois, 21st Comte de Hamel de Manin, but Raoul would have inherited the title on the death of his brother in 1906. His father, Jean Francoise, was an officer in the household of French King, Louis XVIII and a staunch adherent of the royal house of Bourbon.

I have been researching Raoul's sister, Heloise de Hamel de Manin and have therefore built up a lot of information on the de Hame de Manin family.
