Drawn when Moore and Lyon were both students at the Royal College of Art, this is the earliest known portrait of the sculptor. Lyon subsequently became Master of Fine Art at King's College, Newcastle in 1927, and founded the Ashington Group of painters whose members were ex-miners. In 1942 he became Principal of Edinbrugh College of Art, and remained there until his retirement in 1960.
