Hello,

I am a researcher and book author, specialised on the history of the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and the Grand Ducal Family.

The person on that portrait is not Grand Duke Charles of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (who in 1814 was an old man, unable to fight on a battlefield).

This is Prince Charles (1785-1837), the second surviving son of the Grand Duke Charles and half-brother of Queen Louisa of Prussia and Queen Frederica of Hanover- so there is also a mistake on the portrait, because Charles brother George (after the death of his father Grand Duke of M-Strelitz) was always the Hereditary Prince, not his brother. George was 6 years older than Prince Charles. Young Charles was an high-ranking army officer, fighting against Napoleons troops.

I can send you a portrait of Prince Charles to compare - but this here is definitely Prince Charles, not the Grand Duke Charles (1741-1816).

Best regards, Sandra
