This portrait shows the multi-medal-winning British men's Cycling Squad for the 2004 Olympics in Athens. In the Games, Steel, Hayles and Manning won silver for the Team Pursuit event. Steel has competed in three other Olympic Games and Hayles in two, where they both won bronze medals. At the Sydney Games in 2000, Maclean and Hoy won silver for Team Sprint. In Athens in 2004 Hoy won gold for the 1km time trial. He has also won nine World Championship gold medals and was awarded an MBE in 2005. Photographed at the Manchester Velodrome whilst attending the Track Cycling World Cup.

Armed robbers raid the Northern Bank in Belfast, stealing £26.5 million. Gunmen entered the homes of two bank officials, kidnapping their families and forcing them to let them into the bank, before loading cash into vans and driving away. Police and the British and Irish governments claimed that the Provisional IRA was responsible and several of the people arrested had PIRA, Real IRA and Sinn Féin connections.Art and science

An earthquake in the Indian Ocean on Boxing Day causes a tsunami that kills nearly 230,000 people when it hit the coasts of Southeast Asia.
