This photograph records three of the most celebrated British painters engaged in animated conversation over dinner at Lucian Freud’s house. The meal took place in the summer of 2002, when Freud painted a portrait of Hockney over a period of four months. By this time, Freud and Auerbach had been friends for half a century. Although each artist has an entirely distinct style, they each share a commitment to painting portraits of close friends and acquaintances.
