This portraitback to top

Accompanied in the Brockedon Album by a letter postmarked 30 May 1834 from the sitter. The only other recorded portrait of Allen is the drawing by W. Barclay, engraved by G. Cook, published R. Bentley, 1848 (example in NPG), as the frontispiece to Allen's Narrative of the expedition to the Niger in 1841.

By descent to Brockedon's daughter, Elizabeth, wife of J. H. Baxendale; bequeathed to the National Gallery by their son, J. W. Baxendale, with a life interest to his son, Colonel J. F. N. Baxendale and male heirs; placed on loan at the NPG by Colonel Baxendale, 1931; on his death in 1958, without male issue, officially transferred to the National Gallery; on permanent loan from the National Gallery since 1958.
