Whole-length seated to left in his studio, holding palette and mahl-stick, a landscape on an easel behind; black frock-coat, white waistcoat, grey trousers, black shoes; bookshelves to left, box of brushes and colours right; background consists of the end wall of the studio flanked with red curtains and an enormous framed picture, 'The Castle of Gloom' (exhibited RA 1814); curly brown hair, brown eyes, pale complexion, apparent age about 60.
