In a letter from the donor, dated 17 February 1864 (NPG archives), to Earl Stanhope, chairman of the NPG trustees, Bishop Lee thanked him for the honour of accepting the bust, and went on to say that he would send a short account of the bust in a few days. This account was either not sent, or has not survived. The bust was executed posthumously. James Lee had been a master at Rugby under Dr Arnold from 1830 to 1838, and the latter spoke highly of his ability and powers.
