According to the donor, the portrait was a good likeness of his father. Atkinson is shown in the uniform of a Bengal army surgeon, with a medal for the siege of Ghuznee (1st Afghan war), and the star of the order of the Doranee Empire; this last order was instituted by Shah Shooja of Afghanistan after the 1st Afghan war; Atkinson was permitted to wear the insignia of the third class in 1841 (see London Gazette, 17 December 1841). Information on the uniform and orders kindly communicated by Mr Farrington of the India Office Library, London. Canon Atkinson presented several other drawings of Indian officers and officials by his father.
