Pearce records that he painted Austin in 1860. Austin is wearing the undress uniform of a rear-admiral (1856 pattern), with (from left to right), the order of the Bath (CB), the Naval General Service Medal (1793-1840) with two bars, the Arctic Medal (1818-55), and the Sultan's Medal for Syria (1840). The order round his neck has not been identified.

Physical descriptionback to top

Healthy complexion, bluish eyes, grey hair and whiskers. Dressed in a dark necktie, white shirt and waistcoat, and a dark blue naval uniform with gold buttons and epaulettes, silver order round his neck with blue and red ribbon, white enamel star, silver and gold medals with multi-coloured ribbons. Background colour dark brownish-grey.
