In the past this drawing has been dated 1839, due to a misreading of the inscribed date. It is presumably a study for the 1834 oil portrait of Mrs Austin, commissioned from Linnell by Lord Jeffrey, and exhibited RA, 1835 (172). Another small oil portrait on panel, painted in 1840, [1] was sold at Sotheby's, 18 October 1950 (lot 152), from the collection of Mrs T. H. Riches. It was exhibited Exhibition of Works by Old Masters, RA, 1883 (105), and VE, 1892 (130), lent by the Linnell family.
