Head and shoulders to left aged about 60, hazel eyes, grey close-cropped hair and side whiskers, fresh complexion; white neckcloth, broad grey coat collar with 'W' notch, rest of coat sketchily painted in brown; plain brown background.

Provenanceback to top

Probably given to the British Museum on his retirement in 1837 after 30 years' service on the Catalogue of Books; transferred from the British Museum to the NPG in 1879 together with a large collection of other portraits.
