The drawing is an 'improved' version of an original sepia ink sketch (c.21.0 x 17.0) still in the Bagster family collection, half-length seated to left signed and dated: J Linnell/May 1849. Another drawing, more finished and in watercolour, was also in lot 82 at the Linnell sale and sold by the NPG Trustees to Sir John Lane; it was inscribed in the same handwriting: Samuel Bagster Senr/done at Windsor May 1849/John Linnell fect at Windsor/about a year before he died. Included in lot 82 was a number of other portraits of which seven, Bagster, Crotch (2), Jeffrey, Murray, Perry and Young, remain in the NPG, the others being sold at a modest profit to the Scottish NPG, the Office of Works, Sir Edmund Gosse and others.
