This study is possibly related to Jones' painting of 'Waterloo' in the Royal Hospital, Chelsea; 'Waterloo' was exhibited RA, 1822 (313), but the exhibition catalogue omits Barnard from the list of officers. Two other sketches of Seaton and Light (NPG 982b and c), who were also present at Waterloo, are similar in style, although not of the same date.
