The inscription below Gurney was misread in the NPG Annual Report as 'SJn(?)'. Gurney (1768-1845) was a baron of the exchequer, and comparison with other portraits of him establishes the identity beyond question. Manning became Archdeacon of Chichester in 1840, and Gurney died in 1845, so the drawing must have been executed between these two dates. Fulham Palace is the official residence of the Bishop of London. All three men sat to Richmond for formal portraits.
