Burnell's drawing was made in July 1817 a few months before Brydges resigned his seat in Parliament and retired into exile abroad because of 'pecuniary embarrassments'. The K. J. in the inscription refers to the Order of St Joachim of which he was made a Knight in 1808. Harding's copy was probably made in the 1830s for the Granger Society of which Harding was a founder member. Both drawings probably remained in Harding's collection until the dispersal of his effects at Sotheby's 31 March 1848 and 23 July 1853.
