Buckland is shown with the star of the Bath. This cast was made from a plaster bust, which was either returned to the artist, or has subsequently disappeared. It was common for the trustees of the NPG to commission an electro-type in case of damage to the original. This bust is closely related to the marble bust by Weekes of 1858 in the University Museum, Oxford, exhibited RA, 1858 (1306). Another marble bust by Weekes of 1856 is in Westminster Abbey, and one of 1860 is in the Geological Museum, London.

Commissioned from Messrs Elkington & Co by the trustees of the NPG, from the original plaster bust, presented by the artist, 1860.
