This portrait is closely related to the engraving of Buckstone by Maclise, published as no.78 of his 'Portrait Gallery of Illustrious Literary Characters', Fraser's Magazine, XIV (December 1836), facing 720. Although the NPG portrait is only three-quarter length and in reverse, and lacks some of the accessories in the engraving, it is almost identical in pose and features. The NPG portrait was probably the model for the engraving, rather than a version after it. It was also engraved by R. Page, published Chapman and Hall (example in NPG). Another portrait of Buckstone attributed to Maclise was sold At Christie's, 22 July 1871 (lot 161), exhibited VE, 1892 (291), lent by H. J. Murcott; it was sold again at Sotheby's, 4 November 1964 (lot 166), bought D. R. Fleming. It shows Buckstone as an older man and dates from c.1840.
