Whole-length to left aged about 70, blue eyes, rosy complexion, sparse white hair; seated in a mahogany armchair with green leather upholstery, blue tail-coat with brass buttons, buff waistcoat, blue cravat with white spots, white riding-breeches, black boots with brown leather turn-over tops; brown Irish terrier on floor with water-bowl on crimson carpet with decorated border; table to left with light red cloth, brown top-hat, walking-stick, gloves, letters, quill, red sealing-wax, inkpot: in the background books, rolled estate maps, crimson curtain and a marble bust of John Horne Tooke.

Baroness Burdett-Coutts; William Ashmead Bartlett Burdett-Coutts MP and bequeathed by him to the National Gallery in 1921; transferred to the NPG in 1924.
