According to a privately printed catalogue of Lady Eastlake's pictures (copy in V & A Museum library) the portrait was painted in Rome, 'the work of two hours'. Lady Eastlake's nephew, C. Eastlake Smith, said that Sir Charles Eastlake was present during the two hours it was being painted; he was under the impression it was done for a wager but another nephew, Charles Eastlake, said he knew of no confirmation of this (several letters in NPG archive). A crude copy of the head only was offered to the NPG in 1930.
