This portrait was engraved by T. L. Atkinson, published H. Graves, 1852 (example in the NPG). On the table at right is a copy of Campbell's Lives of the Lord Chancellors. An oil study for this portrait is in the Scottish NPG; it was in the artist's sale, Christie's, 28 March 1879 (lot 27), bought by Lord Leighton, and was purchased from the Leighton Sale, Christie's, 14 July 1896 (lot 315).

Healthy complexion, greyish eyes and wig. Dressed in the red and white robes of a judge, with the gold chain of his office as lord chief justice. Seated in a brown wooden chair. Green-covered table at right with a black inkstand and white quill pen, and a brown leather-bound volume. Grey pilaster at right. Rest of background dark brown.
