This oil sketch together with NPG 1695a-b and 2662 and a pen and ink drawing in the British Museum are all studies for Hayter's large group 'The Trial of Queen Caroline' though the dress, head-dress and chair are modified in the final painting.

Physical descriptionback to top

Three-quarter-length seated in profile to left, plumed head-dress as in NPG 1695b; dark brown hair in ringlets (Creevey says 'not Her Majesty's own property'), dark eyes, rouged complexion; pink and white dress, green upholstered armchair, red curtain background.

Provenanceback to top

Hayter family until Christie's (Hayter sale) 21 April 1871 (587) with a cutting from the sale catalogue on the back; probably W. B. Walker of Wolverhampton in 1913; Bonham's, 14 November 1972 (208) bought by Mrs Amanda Bruce-Mitford and bought from her 1972.
