This portrait was extracted from an album of drawings by Hayllar, all of which were inscribed with details of the subjects. Another drawing from the same album was similarly signed and dated 1851, and inscribed, 'A pupil at Cary's Art School'. Hayllar was a pupil at this school until about 1851, when he travelled to Italy. No other portraits of Cary are recorded.
