The drawing is accompanied by a note from Miss Isabella Crampern: 'A sketch of Sir F. Chantrey by himself in his bachelor days. He was confined to the house with an attack of Mumps, & sent to my Father & Mother to account for not paying his customary visit. The bottles on the mantle shelf were intended to spell the name of his Dr. Merreman. [signed] Isabella Crampern' (note in registered packet in NPG archive 2103a).

Whole-length seated suffering miserably from mumps and surrounded by sympathetic cats and dogs.

Sent by Chantrey to his friends Mr and Mrs Crampern and bequeathed by their daughter Isabella to her friends the Misses Frere (daughters of Sir Bartle Frere) in about 1900; given to the NPG by the Misses Frere in 1925.
